Key life insurance terms explained

Eligibility

All Rutgers alumni are eligible to apply for the Member Term Life plan.

Spouse/domestic partner and dependent children up to 23 years of age are also eligible for coverage. This includes legally adopted children, step-children, and foster children who depend on the alumni member for support and maintenance. Children also include grandchildren if they are considered dependents for federal income tax purposes.

Coverage amounts: Alumni

From $50,000 to a maximum of $500,000, in $10,000 increments.

Coverage amounts: Spouse/Domestic Partner

From $50,000 to $500,000, in $10,000 increments (not to exceed 50% of Alumni amount of insurance).

Note: For alumni and spouses over the age of 70, the maximum amount of coverage is $100,000.

Coverage amounts: Children

Aged 15 days to 6 months: $100; aged 6 months to 23: $4,000.

Accelerated Benefit*

Receive up to 60% of your coverage amount (maximum of $250,000) to help with medical costs, the mortgage, or spending quality time with family if you become terminally ill with a life expectancy of 12 months or less.
