All Rutgers alumni who are less than age 60 and working a normal full-time work week are eligible to apply for Long Term Disability Insurance.

Alumni coverage amounts

From $1,000 to a maximum of $5,000, in $500 increments. Not to exceed 50% of monthly earnings when combined with benefits from any other disability insurance program.

Disability

First 24 months: You are unable to perform the duties of your regular occupation, you are under the care of a doctor, and you incur a loss of income of 20% or more.

After 24 months: You are unable to perform the duties of any occupation for which you are reasonably suited by education, training, or experience; and you are under the care of a doctor.

Full-time work

To qualify for disability insurance, you need to be performing regular job duties for pay or profit for at least 30 hours a week, either at the regular workplace or at another location that requires travel.

Elimination period

The time between when you become disabled and file a claim and when your benefits begin being paid out to you. You have the option of choosing either a 60- or 90-day elimination period.
